Blue Jays 2020 Simulation: Crimson Sox Shutout Jays on the opening day

With sport pausing and the world trying to slow the spread of COVID-19, there are still ways to fill the void left by the lack of games. To distract from the much more serious things in the world, Sportsnet's Blue Jays radio station Mike Wilner will simulate every scheduled Blue Jays game for the 2020 season. The simulation is created using Dynasty League Baseball, a tabletop (and online) simulation game with cards and dice.

Game 1 – Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox, Hyun-Jin Ryu vs. Eduardo Rodriguez

The afternoon started very well for the Blue Jays award winner Lefty, when Ryu Andrew Benintendi, the first batsman of the new season, struck three part ups and downs as part of a first inning. Ryu would retire 10 of the first 11 Batters he faces and Christian Vazquez, who was stranded right there, would only allow a double in the second inning.

# Bluejay's opening day simulation is in progress !!!

Hyun-Jin Ryu instantly makes himself popular with his new fans by kicking out the ball game's first batsman, Andrew Benintendi, and JD Martinez beats top1 after a 1-2-3 win over Rafael Devers!

The Blue Jays get a lead off single from Bo Bichette in the first inning, but cannot redeem it. The high drama strikes in the second when Rowdy Tellez straps a 410-foot bomb into the immediate midfield with two out and one man on the first. Sox center-back Jackie Bradley Jr., however, gets on his horse and climbs the 10-foot wall to make a home run from the DH of the Jays, with the result remaining 0-0.

Boston hits the scoreboard first on the fourth. Ryu's run of 10 out of 11 hits retired when he J.D. Martinez takes a walk. After a Xander Bogaerts flies out, Michael Chavis crushes a ball that no outfielder has brought back. The home run brings the Red Sox 2-0 to the top.

Visitors would add another run in the fifth. Kevin Pillar (yes, he starts in the right field for the Red Sox) leads with a double and is redeemed by Benintendi's two-out-of-two excavator.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are struggling to get something going against Boston's standard starter on opening day. In the first six innings, the Jays only managed two Bichette singles and two walks without moving a single runner past second base and beating eleven times. Every single Jays batsman strikes at least once, with Cavan Biggio and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. both whistling twice.

Ben Nicholson-Smith is Sportsnet's baseball editor. Arden Zwelling is a senior writer. Together they bring you the most extensive Blue Jays podcast in the league, covering the latest news with opinions and analysis, as well as interviews with other insiders and team members.

Ryu returns for the seventh time, but releases a single and a walk, and is drawn, replaced by another new acquisition, Anthony Bass, a right-hander who has had tremendous success against left-handers in 2019 and held a .165 / .221 / .304 line.

The right-hand man plays true to form and brings switch hitter Jose Peraza and left-handers Benintendi and Rafael Devers, all on flying balls, to maintain the deficit in three runs.

Randal Grichuk starts seventh with a single and becomes the first Blue Jay next to Bichette with a baseline hit, but after a Travis Shaw is flown out, he is cleared from Tellez's bat on a double play grounder.

An add-on run for the Red Sox comes from Wilmer Font in 8th place above. The righty, which we should see much less as a prelude this season thanks to the additional depth of the Blue Jays, gets two quick outs, but then allows two consecutive doubles against Mitch Moreland, which Chavis and Chavis hits Vazquez, who won the Sox with 4: 0 put up.

Rodriguez is not coming out for the eighth time, the Red Sox decide to leave alone well enough after the South Paw delivered seven innings with three goals, two walks and eleven strikes. Righty Ryan Brasier comes out of the bullpen and causes Danny Jansen to pinch Reese McGuire. The train works when McGuire delivers a double, and after Bichette fails, Biggio takes a walk to move the tie barrel into the top circle.

With the 3-4 hits of the Blue Jays, Boston goes to setup man Matt Barnes, and the hard-rolled Righty is more than up to the task and defeats both Gurriel Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. the best chance of scoring the home team since the second inning.

Font moves a few steps to zero out at ninth place, and Marcus Walden comes out to end it. He only allows one Grichuk single down in ninth place and ends the game with back-to-back groundball from the bats of Shaw and Tellez.

The Blue Jays simply could not get the offense going in the simulated opener, which the Red Sox eliminated 4-0.
