MANILA, Philippines – Fiba announced that it would suspend all competitions as of Friday as part of the Covid 19 pandemic.
“Given the current situation with the outbreak of the Corona Virus [Covid-19] and to protect the health and safety of our players, coaches, officials and fans, Fiba announced today that all Fiba competitions tomorrow, Friday, the 13th ., will be suspended in March 2020, ”said Fiba on its official website late Thursday evening (Manila time).
Fiba has several scheduled events in 2020, including the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualification, in which the Philippines play.
There is also the 3 × 3 Olympic qualifier in which Gilas Pilipinas should take part.
Nevertheless, Fiba's decision coincided with announcements from several leagues to suspend the competition, including the NBA, UEFA, Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1.
"Fiba will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and evaluate the options for continuing or not continuing the contests, if and when the situation permits," said the organization.
The World Health Organization classified Covid-19 as a pandemic after at least 110 countries were affected.
