MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University coach George Pascua didn't have to think too much about who Lady Tamaraws' next captain would be after skipper Jerrili Malabanan's departure.
Pascual had no doubt that her veteran setter Gel Cayuna would fit more than the bill.
“I saw all the qualities of a leader in her. She is a nice person, knows how to follow directions, and has the ability to lead a team with her leadership and discipline, ”said Pascua in Filipino.
Cayuna's leadership was seen on Tuesday leading the Lady Tamaraws' victory over the University of the East.
“I keep telling her that you need to be effective as a leader by showing this in your actions. Once you can show your teammates that you can set a good example, they will know that you accept that responsibility, ”said Pascua.
"She is the playmaker and she has to be strong-willed so that her teammates can help her make decisions."
The Cayuna graduate took her coach's advice to heart and scored nine points and had 18 excellent sets.
"I am redoubling my efforts to make up for what is missing. My teammates also help me, so it is not so difficult for me to adapt," said Cayuna, who also takes on the role of Kyle Negrito.
