Irish Magno shows her Olympic ticket.
Irish Magno gave 19-year-old Sumaiya Qosimova a proper clinic for the Olympic boxing qualification tournament in Asia and Oceania on Wednesday evening in Amman, Jordan, to secure a place at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo and became fourth Filipino and first lady boxer in the games.
Magno prevailed from the first bell and was hardly threatened by Tajikistan's national flyweight champion. She dominated her qualification to claim sixth and final Olympic place in her division with a unanimous victory.
Qosimova, visibly slimmer than 28-year-old Filipino, showed a spirited performance in the next round. The stubborn Magno found her tracks again in the further course of the round and gave the judges no reason to doubt the result.
But instead of letting go of her guard, Magno continued to press and hit Qosimova with heavy shots as her confidence grew as the match reached the closing minute.
Carlo Paalam, who also competed for an Olympic berth, was not so lucky after the country's best flyweight player failed against a fiery Saken Bibossinov from Kazakhstan (1-4).
Bibossinov, slightly three inches taller than Paalam, maximized its length and gave Filipino a difficult time to connect. After two rounds, Paalam raged and threw wildly devoted blows to stop Bibossinov. Unfortunately, time was not on his side.
Magno thus joined his boxing colleague Eumir Felix Marcial, pole vaulter EJ Obiena and gymnast Carlos Yulo at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Paalam, the reigning champion of the Southeast Asian Games, still has the chance to secure a spot at the Petecio Olympics through another qualifying meeting at the World Boxing Championships in Paris, France from May 13th to 24th secure a spot in Tokyo after losing in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
