WASHINGTON – Khris Middleton suddenly grew cold against the Washington Wizards.
Fortunately for the Milwaukee Bucks, he continued shooting.
After Giannis fouled Antetotkounmpo, Middleton recovered from five consecutive mistakes and scored Milwaukees' last nine points. The goats defeated Bradley Beal and the Washington Wizards 137-134 in extra time.
"It was frustrating," said Middletown about his cold expansion from late in regulation to early in extension. “I thought it was simple shots, great looks that I put down most of the time. When I went into time out and defended myself again, everyone just told me to keep shooting. "
Middleton, who finished with 40 points, pressed a 3-pointer from above on the key 30.2 seconds before the end of the key to give the Bucks a lead of 135-132.
After Beal – who had his second game in a row with 50 points – made two free throws, Middleton was fouled by 7.8 seconds and made both attempts from the line, it 137-134 and Troy Brown, Jr.s 3 to make – Outlined pointer on buzzer.
"We definitely didn't want (Beal) to take the last shot," said Buck's coach Mike Budenholzer. "We are lucky that we probably played a bit more than she did."
Beal, who had a career high of 53 points in a loss on Sunday in Chicago, topped it with a 55-point attempt that included 22 points in the fourth quarter and seven more in extra time.
"I was just locked up and just having fun," said Beal, the first player in franchise history to play 50-point games in a row. "Probably the funniest game I've ever played in."
On the day of Kobe Bryant's memorial service in Los Angeles, Beal was the first player since Bryant in March 2007 to score more than 50 points on consecutive days.
"Oh man, this is crazy," said Beal. "Didn't know that. That was Kobe. That was what drove him and this ceremony today only brought the feeling of tears back."
Shabazz Napier added a seasonal high of 27 points for Washington, which has lost three times in a row.
Antetokounmpo had 22 points and 14 rebounds before fouling 1:33 for Milwaukee, who won 17 out of 19.
The wizards gathered down from 17 points and took 1:01 in lead 123-121 on Beals 3.
Eric Bledsoe's free throws tied it and Middleton also missed after a Beal miss. Felipe Lopez blocked Rui Hachimura's attempt to cancel a Beal pass 1-0 seconds ahead, and Milwaukee's alley-oop throw at the summer failed.
"I should probably have fired the ball at the end of (regulation)," said Beal. "Admittedly, Rui (Hachimura) was wide open. I should have given him a zipper ID. I kind of blamed him, so I made him fail. "
Middleton had a career high of 51 points the first time the teams met, a Milwaukee win between 151 and 131 on January 28th.
The Bucks led 51:49 in the third quarter when Middleton's knockout started a 14-2 run.
Washington recovered and Napier's four-point game was 9:29 to 102-93, and his layup soon drew the wizards within seven. Middleton scored four direct points to double the lead again, but Beal scored 17 direct Wizards points and his 3 made 119-116 with 2:15 left.
SHABAZZ BOUNCES BACK
After a total of 10 points in the last two games, Napier scored 27 in 10 of 13 shooting and added seven assists.
"He hasn't played well in the last few games," said Wizards coach Scott Brooks. "I had a nice chat with him this afternoon. We needed more. He came in and gave us more. It is simply not counted. it plays with a force, it plays with a presence. "
