SANTA CLARA, California – The 49ers from San Francisco developed from No. 2 in Draftpicks to No. 1 in Seeds within a year.
After four defeats in a row, including only ten wins in the first two seasons of coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers (13: 3) became an NFC top team thanks to an offensive game and a significantly improved defense.
"We knew that the year we had the opportunity, we were pretty good at dealing with what we had on paper and watching the boys during the training camp," said Shanahan. “We knew we could feel it pretty well after the first five games. Then you experience a number of injuries and other things and you never know how to do it fully. That impressed me the most with the boys, nobody wavered. "
This was particularly the case on Sunday night in the season finale when the 49ers finished an eight-game skid in Seattle and defeated the Seahawks 26-21 after stopping an inch from the goal line in the last few seconds. This was the fifth consecutive game for San Francisco that was decided in the last 10 seconds.
This sealed the team's first championship title since 2012 and San Francisco was number 1 in the NFC for the first time since 1997.
The Niners are now resting this week instead of traveling across the country to play Philadelphia in the wildcard round. San Francisco has said goodbye after week 3 and can use the added rest.
"It feels good to get where we are," said Shanahan. “Our goal was to get into the playoffs. It feels much better to be the only one. By now everyone knows that there is only one team that is happy at the end of the year. "
Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. The Seahawks had no answer to Samuel and Kittle, who did most of their damage in the middle. Jimmy Garoppolo targeted the two 12 times and completed all passes for 186 yards. Samuel has also added a 30-yard touchdown run.
WHAT DOES HELP NEED?
Defense of the second half. After the Seahawks closed in the first half, the Niners struggled to stop after that. Russell Wilson drove the Seahawks to TDs on the first three trips of the second half, and then came just a few inches from another on the fourth trip that would have won the game. Seattle converted 6 out of 8 third tees in the second half, winning 269 yards.
Dre Greenlaw. The rookie linebacker had a mixed game this season, but may have been the biggest game of the year for the Niners. His duel against Jacob Hollister, who was only an inch or two in front of the goal line in the last few seconds, refused the Seahawks victory and gave San Francisco a week off.
CB Ahkello Witherspoon. For the second game in a row, Witherspoon was beaten for two touchdown passes. He was drawn too late in favor of Emmanuel Moseley, who played well in the season when Witherspoon was injured. Shanahan would not commit to a starter for the playoff start.
The Niners had no major injuries to report from the game. Shanahan said he hoped to overtake Dee Ford (thighs) and Jaquiski Tartt (ribs) for the playoff start.
9 – The 49ers were the eighth team in league history that, according to investigations by the Elias Sports Bureau, improved the total winnings by at least nine games from the previous season.
The Niners have a week to rest before playing their first playoff game at Levi’s Stadium on January 11th. You will play the lowest remaining starting value from Minnesota, Seattle and Philadelphia.
