The Tokyo Olympics, which deviate from their original schedule almost exactly a year later, are not the only multisport event that Filipino athletes should prepare for in 2021.
The 31st Southeast Asian Games are also scheduled for this year, and the President of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino wants the biennial meeting to take place at least three months after the Summer Games.
"We will recommend Vietnam to host the 31st SEA Games in the second half of the year, as will our hosting in 2019," said Tolentino.
Vietnam has provisionally planned the games in Hanoi from November 21 to December 2, 2021. The Vietnam edition will include 36 to 40 sports, most of which are Olympic disciplines.
The SEA Games Federation has yet to deliver its official seal of approval on the proposed calendar. The Philippines hosted the SEA Games last year. The opening ceremonies took place on November 30th.
The Vietnamese organizers have scheduled a meeting of the SEA Games Federation on May 20 and 21 in Hanoi to officially present their program and set the dates.
"These dates provide enough time for [the] Tokyo [Olympics] and give our athletes who will take part in the Olympics enough time to prepare," said Tolentino, the country's congressman and national cycling chief.
Filipino athletes won the overall title of the 30th SEA Games as hosts at the end of last year with a total of 149 gold medals, 117 silver medals and 121 bronzes from 56 sports.
"Our goal for the next SEA games is to remain competitive at a high level," said Tolentino.
