MANILA, Philippines – Roger Pogoy was a season-to-day decision made between TNT and Meralco in Game 1 of the 2019 PBA Governor’s Cup semi-final on Sunday evening.
The KaTropa decided to play Pogoy in the important series opening game, and the experienced swinger did not disappoint.
Pogoy is still suffering from a back injury that he suffered three weeks ago, but he showed no signs of it when he helped his team achieve a 103-94 victory over the Bolts.
"First of all, I'm lucky enough to have enough rest to recover. To be honest, I'm still not 100 percent. The other day it was even painful, so I just rested and didn't exercise. I was just trying to play it through, "Pogoy said in Filipino.
The 27-year-old Pogoy also rolled his right ankle when he played the game for the first time, but flinched back to 18 points in 38 minutes.
"Game 1 is really the most important game in a series. That's why we made every effort to get Game 1, which is why we were aggressive from the start," he said.
Pogoy, whose injury prevented him from qualifying for the Philippine team at the 30th Southeast Asian Games, set the tone with six points in the first quarter before triggering a huge eight-point TNT run in the third quarter ,
Pogoy had the luxury of a long break before the series against Meralco started, but this time it won't be because the Semis is played every other night.
"This is the difficult part because my back could hurt tomorrow after today's game. And earlier I could play it through because of the adrenaline," he said.
TNT wants to climb 2-0 in the Araneta Colosseum on Tuesday evening.
