MANILA, Philippines – Romero Duno returned to success after defeating his Filipino compatriot Angelito Merin in the first round of his easy fight on Saturday at the Lagao Gym in General Santos City.
Duno improved in his first fight on Filipino soil with 17 KOs to 22-2.
24-year-old Duno has fought his last three matches in the US, including a knockout round match against unbeaten Ryan Garcia for the WBC Silver and WBO North American Boxing Organization lightweight titles last November at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas ,
Meanwhile, Merin lost his fourth loss in a row and his sixth in seven fights for a 10-13 record.
Also on the map was the former World Cup contender Aston Palicte, who stopped Jonathan Francisco in the second round.
Palicte (26-4) broke his duel while Francisco (10-15) dropped his sixth consecutive match.
The 29-year-old Palicte, challenged for the WBO super flyweight world title, but lost to Kazuto Ioka in Japan in June 2019.
