BUTUAN CITY – Athletes from the cities of Butuan and Zamboanga who won medals for the country during the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) receive cash rewards from their local governments to reward their accomplishments.
In Butuan, City Councilor Cromwell Nortega said the City Council had passed two resolutions commending the athletes for their remarkable accomplishments and approving monetary incentives for each of them.
An athlete is 21-year-old Dave Cea, who won the gold medal in the Taekwondo Men category under 74 kilograms (light) after a 10: 5 victory over NutthaweeKlompong from Thailand.
Cea from Purok 4 in Barangay Tagabaka took part in the SEA Games for the first time. He attributed his feat to a punishing training routine before the games. Cea receives a reward of 30,000 pesetas.
Another athlete is Elly Jan Semine Nituda, a member of the 9-man Filipino Sepak Takraw team that won a bronze medal in the Double Event Men team. The team lost 2-1 to Myanmar in the semi-final. Nituda receives a Php 15,000 reward.
Nortega, vice chairman of the sports committee, said that both Cea and Nituda had pride and honor for Butuan, for whom they would be recognized at an athlete awards ceremony on December 23.
In Zamboanga, the local government grants P150,000 cash incentives to an athlete who has won a gold medal, PP100,000 for silver and P75,000 for bronze.
Sixteen athletes from Zamboanga, led by Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz, contributed 18 medals for the country during the recently completed SEA Games. eight gold, six silver and four bronze./lzb
