MANILA, Philippines – The postponement of the men's 3 × 3 Olympic basketball qualifier has been a blessing for the Filipino team, said Ryan Gregorio.
Gregorio, who acts as a special assistant to the President of Samahang Basketbolng Pilipinas, Al Panlilio, said that the postponement of the qualification date in Austria from May 26th to 30th next year will give Filipinos more time to practice and build up their chemistry gives.
"I don't think we have enough preparation when the tournament has started," Gregorio admitted in a Filipino story on the PBA website. "Because it would coincide with the PBA schedule and the players have other schedules of their own."
The qualification tournament was originally scheduled to take place in India from March 18-22 before being postponed due to Fiba's coronavirus pandemic.
"Because it was moved, the 20 countries and their players are back to zero when it comes to conditioning and preparation," he said.
"Once we get approval from the IATF to play and play basketball again, we will have a great opportunity to play together to improve our chemistry and camaraderie," added Gregorio.
The Gilas 3 × 3 team is banned by CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa and the outstanding amateurs Joshua Munzon and Alvin Pasaol.
Perez and Tautuaa were part of the PH team that won the first 3 × 3 basketball gold for men at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
