MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East showed its pedigree again with a gold double at the UAAP fencing tournament of season 82 on Friday.
The Red Warriors led the way after holding Ateneo (45-42) in the team foil final to claim a 5-1-0 (gold-silver-bronze) medal for their 14th overall victory.
In order not to be surpassed, the Lady Warriors had a 4-1-3 medal list for a best 13th championship in the league.
Sammuel Tranquilan led the Red Warriors when he said goodbye to the team with his third MVP plum in a row.
Although his best player left the team, UE head coach Amatov Canlas said he was not disturbed because he had already amassed enough talent to get them through the next few years.
"We still have a lot of emerging stars so the training doesn't stop and the transition is really deep," Canlas said in Filipino.
The UE prevailed against La Salle (45-36) in the women's epee final and prevailed in the women's saber title round against the University of Santo Tomas with a dominant 45:19 victory.
Rookie MVP Queendenise Dalmacio and Sam Catantan led the Lady Warriors in an exhibition that Canlas has been expecting since he saw his children at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
"Queen and Sam are batchmates and I was recruiting them all at once," said Canlas. "The Queen's level of play really improved when she joined the national team and they became mentally harder after the SEA games."
The Blue Eagles opted for second place with a 1-3-2 move, while the Green Archers took third place in the men's division with a 0-1-5 record.
La Salle was the second place in the women's division with 1-2-1, while Ateneo, champion of the 81st season, finished third with 1-1-2.
